The Poetry of Austin Grant

Had I Understood...?

I thought I knew him then--
		  (as Youth presumes the role
		   of Mentor of the Truly-wise)
		And I condemned that man:
		  A blackened chunk of Soul
		  In spirits-mire consumed alive!

Oh, would I could relive that youth
And see what's been as I should have then!

It came to me one day--
		  (As age oft-time removes
the blinds we place upon Mind's eye)
And I could see at last:
A man who could not live
And drink became his way to die!

If then I knew what now I see
Could I have changed what came to be?
